Research Associate

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science's Collaboration for Outcomes Research & Evaluation (CORE) seeks a Research Associate to support a research program in health economics and health services research focused on the clinical implementation of genome-wide sequencing. The Research Associate will be affiliated with the GenCOUNSEL project, which is led by international researchers in genetic counselling, genomics, ethics, health services implementation and health economics at UBC, BC Children’s and Women’s Hospitals, McGill University, and Memorial University, and will determine the most effective and efficient methods of providing genetic counselling with clinical GWS implementation. CORE, located within the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC, is a multidisciplinary group of researchers with expertise in clinical pharmacy, pharmacoepidemiology, health economics, health services research, program evaluation and health promotion research.

The Research Associate will support the research programs of faculty members within CORE and the GenCOUNSEL project, and develop his/her own research program in health services research. The successful candidate may be expected to teach.

Qualified candidates will have a Doctorate degree in a relevant discipline and four (plus) years postdoctoral experience; four (plus) years experience with health research projects in academic settings; knowledge of and experience with successful grant applications; research experience and familiarity with health services and health economics research in genomic medicine is desirable, as well as the following skills: 

  • Demonstrated project management skills. 
  • Excellent communication skills including strong skills in writing, editing, and reviewing reports and journal manuscripts. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including: the ability to exercise tact, discretion, initiative, confidentiality and judgment as well as the ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. 
  • Demonstrated analytical skills including the ability to analyze, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve problems. 
  • Organizational skills including the ability to multi-task, while being accurate and keeping attention to detail. 

The Research Associate will do the following: 

  • Lead and contribute to applied clinical and health services research. 
  • Lead and support colleagues in preparing grant applications. 
  • Conduct systematic and non-systematic literature searches. 
  • Draft, edit and review articles for publication and technical reports. 
  • Present research findings at academic conferences and workshops. 
  • Prepare and implement a strategy for dissemination of results and knowledge transfer activities. 
  • Supervise research assistants, summer students and/or junior graduate students. 

The Research Associate will work independently, with regular updates on progress and challenges. The Research Associate must exercise judgment on the day-to-day progress of research projects. The individual must perform their duties and interact tactfully with co-workers, researchers and study participants. A high level of confidentiality is essential. Structured decision making and an ability to work independently are critical. Consequence of error would be major. The Research Associate's role could negatively affect the accuracy of research findings if attention to detail and sufficient skill are not applied to work.
