The Faculty of Pharmacy was established 1936 in light of the urgent need for highly skilled pharmacists and chemists who meet the efficiency standards of scientific and technical joint services to perform pharmaceutical and chemical analyse in Iraq. It temporarily occupied a building attached to the Royal Hospital. The first graduated class consisted of 12 students and those were qualified at the time as ‘chemical pharmacists’. In 1947/1948, the degree of ‘Chemistry with a Bachelor’ was introduced and subsequently the school was renamed: Royal College of Pharmacy and Chemistry until 1958 / 1959 when the school finally became the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Baghdad. In 1959 / 1960 and in line with the degrees awarded by the University of Baghdad, the certificate to be granted to graduates of the College became a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, and in 1972/1973 the school developed graduate studies in Masters in four areas: chemistry pharmaceuticals, drugs and medicinal plants, toxicology, and pharmaceutics. In 1975/1976 a doctorate in pharmaceutical chemistry was introduced.
